Freshly made tagliolini with shavings of white truffles were consumed during an almost silent supper this pair were having in the kitchen. Valerina finished her meal first and slowly sipped her wine in waiting for Giovanni to scrape the last bits of pasta from his plate. Neither knew what to say to the other, as that earlier event in the barn cast a somber shadow over these two people. Fork touched down onto his plate finally, as she couldn’t wait for this meal to be over.
Conscientious hostess, Valerina picked up her empty plate and reached over for his. Doing so, his hand touched hers in an attempt in assisting the removal of dishes from the table. She pulled away from his touch, as a plate was in either hand to be placed in the sink.
Last thing Valerina Allegretti needed was to be in this young man’s presence any longer. Standing at the sink with back to him, her body language exhibited a glacial aura in hoping he would leave the kitchen and go upstairs. Blue canvas shoes of hers even started to kick the wooden cabinet beneath the sink in an awkward rhythm. Dishes were placed into the sink, faucet turned on, and the water’s whooshing sound was a way of avoiding any further interaction with him. Just a wish was all she wanted to be fulfilled at that moment.
Yet, Gio had a different wish of his own, as he came up behind this woman in stillness at the sink. As his hand touched her shoulders slowly, she visibly shuddered.
Muscular build with facial hair and an inviting smile on his face, was perfectly matched with a frame of over six feet tall, allowing him to hover over her as they stood there together. He revealed his feelings towards the lady of the vineyard, “I am attracted to you”, His smile broadened, as his eyes gazed downward at the outline of her backside beneath fabric, “Valerina, you are beautiful”.
Valerina scoffed at his words, as she shook head in disbelief and turned the faucet off, “Don’t say something which is not true”, Thought of the happiness which ceased many years ago came in a sigh, “Beauty died when my husband did”.
Gio whispered slowly in her ear, “You are a beautiful woman…” Reinforcing the reality of the person who was standing right in front of him, “…And alive still”……..
