Archie's
hands squeezed onto the sides of the bathroom sink, attempting to gain a steady
footing. He pulled his head upward to gaze at the figure in the mirror. As
Hamilton did so, a sense of failure consumed him.
Finally,
a single thought began nagging at him. He wondered what exactly Angela heard or
saw between himself and Gennaro Esposito. Or, maybe her eyes opened long enough
to get a glimpse of Archie's face beneath the office lights.
Those
internal questions hung over Hamilton's heart.
Archie's
senses were reeling, as visions and aromas of what happened ripped off the scab
of normality.
Nausea
erupted from within this troubled man, as he started vomiting into the toilet
bowl.
Concerned
over her husband's well being caused Maddy to stop pretending to be asleep and
come to his aid. Getting out of bed, she knocked on the bathroom door gently,
"Archie? Are you alright?"
Of
all the moments when he wished there was no one else there for him, Hamilton
took a deep breath and gingerly replied, "Oh, Maddy, everything's okay.
I'm probably just coming down with a flu bug or something", Archie
attempted to put the best face upon a most awkward situation.
"Honey,
you should get a Bromide" ,giving him a piece of tender advice.
Hamilton
gave into her advice, so that she would leave him alone. A kind veneer replied
to this inquiring wife, "Maddy, go on back to sleep. Don't worry about me.
I'll be just fine".
Not
wanting to nag him to the point of being bitter with her, Madeline heeded his
words and whispered through the door, "Archie? I'm here if you need me.
I'm going to lay back down, darling".
Faucet
turned on full blast camouflaged Archie's weeping, as he couldn't contain his
own guilt. He'd arrived too late to prevent Angela's orgasmic ordeal. And, when
he did arrive, death's angel sat on his shoulder giving a light whisper of
salvation to him.
Pulling
his mental and physical self together, he took a deep breath for a few seconds
more. Hamilton could not face any human being yet. Specifically, the wife and
mother of his children.
Cold
water splashed against Archie's face, began to bring about a scintilla of regulation
to this wayward man. He was ready to step back out into the world outside.
Within
ten minutes, Archie walked out of the bathroom and gazed at the body which lay
on the bed. Madeline was laying on her side with her back to him. She wished he
would reach out for her to assist him, yet he didn't.
Mixed
yellow and light green stream of vomit on his t-shirt left a slight stain. He
left the bedroom and walked down to the kitchen.
Although
he barely paid attention to anything that Maddy had said through the bathroom
door, Archie did take a Bromide to calm his gut.
Unable
to return upstairs to their bedroom anymore that late night, Archie Hamilton
couldn't face looking into Madeline's eyes.
Perching
himself into a chair by the window, Hamilton folded is arms and began to claw
for a few minutes of sleep. Yet, peace of mind had become Kryptonite to this
rusted Superman.
